Befriending a homesick leprechaun is risky--you're liable to end up invisible or shrunk to little people size. Tom's testy companion produces a wished-for dog (and a spell to make the parents approve) and provides an incentive to good behavior (throwing away clutter, washing when dirty) but mostly he's an annoyance to hide and appease: Tom feels stuck with luck. He takes a picture book on Ireland out of the library and finally convinces little O'Toole that his ""lilt"" awaits him at home. Mrs. Hyman's whimsically cute illustrations fit the light, bright tone of the story; for all that they're typical leprechaun, American boy, perfect pet types, it's funny and fun to read.
