Family novel of the English countryside, a book of not better than average worth. Story of a self-willed woman who achieves her ambition, though it calls for murder, to marry the owner of the estate which dominates the village. How she loses all warmth, is blackmailed, breaks with family and friends -- and finally, with bank-ruptoy in old age, is faced with adjustment to life without the power she loves. So-so.
