On first acquaintance (Meg of Heron's Neck, 1961), both girl and book had individuality; now Meg is a cipher who happens to be around--the focus is on friend Marty, another x--and the story is a weak chain of circumstances. Marty wants a wild pet, worries about a nasty boy who made her stumble while exploring a deserted house, and Wonders if the boy may be right in looking for treasure. (There's no reason why he should be.) With Meg and Meg's boy cousin Kit, she helps prevent the spread of the fire that burns down the old house that was Just bought by the hostile father of the bad boy who tripped her. Naturally he accuses her of starting the fire, While this is belabored, a real treasure--an Indian shell heap--turns up; after Marty's vindication, a pet arrives in the form of a drake named Mr. Diddle. Kids who liked Meg will be disgusted; kids coming to Heron's Neck for the first time will never come back.
