THE TAKULA TREE

Incited by Yona (who preaches ""Africa for the Africans"") the natives become restless and attempt to drive out the white settlers for terrorizing and chanting. Mr. and Mrs. Manship, missionaries, and their son Paul, flee the mission, aided by Daniel, one of the mission students. The author does not clearly define the several characters in the beginning, and, in the thick of the jungle, the reader is hopelessly lost in the increasing confusion. The necessary political and historical background that lie behind the native reaction is not made clear. The Manships are at last forced to leave Africa because of the dangerous situation, but they promise to return.
