When an eleven-year-old Californian arrives to spend a year with her grandparents on their Michigan farm, a strange new world is approached with curiosity and excitement. Jeannie would ""never learn younger"" than in that troubled year of 1914. Her new life of blizzards, cows, and flannel nightgowns is disrupted by a fear which gnaws at Jeannie. It was a risky time to go abroad, she had heard; her parents had just left to spend a year in England. Would they return? The author narrates Jeannie's story with sensitivity; she seems to know how much to state and how much to leave to the reader. The result is a realistic story about a believable character which young girls should appreciate.
