PENNY IN HAWAII

In this story of adjustment, the message is repeated several times for the reader. Eleven year old Penny is shunned by her Hawaiian contemporaries, because she sings the praises of Oklahoma (her former home) too loudly and too long. Her nine year old brother is surrounded by new friends almost immediately, a fact which emphasizes Penny's failure. After a series of misadventures and extreme misunderstandings, Penny establishes herself as a proud Hawaiian by giving an elaborate A-H party-- All Hawaiian-- for her would-be friends. Illustrations by Arnold Spilka are light and spontaneous, unlike the moral-heavy text.
