A young western with a different slant that, along with good dialogue, lifts a routine family achievement story out of the ordinary. New Mexico territory in 1877 is the scene of twelve year old Rusty McKay's deeds. He finds a steer, Ruidoso, with a decoy brand, put out to catch rustlers and hence considered unowned and a jinx to anyone who cares for it. But Rusty, determined to help build up a herd for his father, thinks otherwise, takes Ruidoso home, and a streak of good luck follows. Then mysterious trickery makes the McKays think Ruidoso really is ""hoodooed"", but in the end he's cleared and saved from the slaughter house. Tom Leamon's drawings for a nice story of a steer with personality.
