Storm signals is the marriage of Dirk and Martha Lawrence alert Ellery to the possibility and prevention of a crime passionel since Dirk is uncontrollably jealous, and vigilance over Martha reveals an involvement with an aging actor. But as a progression of letters lead from hidden assignations to the rendezvous with death, it is Ellery who subverts a jury's decision with evidence of a premeditated plan to kill. The old hand, in top form, this is smart stuff.
