More than just murder is at issue when a local Grandma Moses is killed in Shinn Corners, a small New England village with a population of 36, some old traditions, and even more prejudices. With the exception of Judge Shinn, and a young New Yorker, Johnny, the local folk are determined to convict an itinerant Polish tramp; Johnny is able to hang the jury on which he sits; but it is an art critic and a painting which provide the evidence of guilt and save an innocent man. Talky and balky these natives- but sharp.
