Though eleven year old Jimmy Stone misses his dad and senses an emptiness in his life, he understands very little about his parents' recent separation. When Dad invites him on a long weekend hunting trip, Jimmy is thrilled. Together they penetrate the Colorado woodland, hunting deer, setting up camp and enjoying the pleasures of masculine companionship. Crisis strikes the next day however, when Dad breaks his leg and Jimmy is called upon to make his way back to the road and bring help. How he summons his courage and physical strength to battle the trails of the forest, the hazards of a snowstorm and the doubts of a rescue party makes for a suspenseful story of a kind of heroism many real boys can appreciate. Though a near-tragedy brings the family together, it is a comforting ending to a tense tale.
