Minutely described development of a girl against the background of British military life in Haiti. A psychological analysis of her relations to adults, and her perception of their false standards in social contacts, her painful discovery of freedom in thought and speech, during a long visit to England, her insistent urge to return to the Island, seeking peace in its beauty. The story seems at times confused; the romance is not wholly satisfying: but from the point of view of the girl and her inner life it is a rather extraordinary picture. A book for women.
