Louisiana in the '80s and '90s, with the setting a sugar plantation and the Negroes and owners as proponents. The study of a woman so unrelievedly vicious, selfish, cruel, that she seems unreal -- and deserves the fate one sees in store for her when she meets a man who is her equal. Not a pleasant book.
