It looks like Genny's family will be complete again when her older brother Larry comes home from the army, and she arranges a surprise party in a neighbor's yard to celebrate the return. The party is a success, but the family is already breaking up; next morning the parents announce that Daddy will be moving out. For a while Genny almost blames Larry for not being able to patch up their parents' marriage, but then she reminds herself that families come in all shapes and that the shapes are always changing. Greenfield's portrayal of Genny's feelings, her family's interactions, and her conversations with an old neighbor is sensitive enough to make this one of the more honest and effective entries in its limited, problem/consolation genre.
