A well-researched account of the armed forces' efforts to provide safe exit and recovery from speeding airplanes, submarines, balloons, and space-ships. World r I pointed up the desperate need for a ""crash"" program for safe escape from disabled aircraft, and with the jet and space age, fast dependable automatic equipment became a necessity. The many stories of actual parachute jumps, ejection seat tests, scents from submarines, and supersonic bailouts make exciting reading. The author interviewed dozens of the men who developed and tested these systems and their dedications and bravery give the book a special vitality. Non-technical, and of special interest to men and boys.
