PETER'S ADVENTURES IN BLUEBERRY LAND

Elsa Beskow wrote for an earlier generation of Swedish children and we are told that she is still popular there. If invented here and now, the story of Peter, reduced in size by an elvish little forest fellow who enlists seven ""blueberry boys"" and five red lingonberry girls to help fill his berry baskets for his mother's birthday, could only be considered senseless and cloying. But Beskow's naive verse and gentle watercolors in art nouveau borders do have an innocent sweetness that couldn't be simulated today.
