MARCH HARE

Oddly enough, two books covering very much the same background and period, and both autobiographies of women, are appearing two days apart -- and are being reported here and now. (Second one below -- Sunrise to Evening Star) March Hare is the story of a German girl, born in the West Transvaal, in 1862, and growing up in the formative period of South Africa. She knew ""Oom"" Paul Kruger, followed her parents to the gold fields, farmed, saw four wars at first hand -- the Sekukuni War, the two Beer Wars, and the African end of the World War. Excellent human interest material -- not so loquacious as Tia Barberita but with somewhat that distinctive flavor; the life story of a woman of courage, kindliness, deep religious faith, who at seventy retains her keen interest in life and people.
