THIS IS AN ORCHESTRA

A handbook on orchestral music, covering the organization of the orchestra; brief description of each instrument, hints on choosing an instrument to play, a basic list of recordings for young people, and a small section of quick biographies of the makers of stringed instruments of the past. While the section dealing with the blue print of the orchestra and the individual instruments is explicit enough with the simple prose and full-page photographs of the instruments and musicians of the Cleveland Symphony Orchestra, the list of recordings with no explanatory notes and the repetitious section dealing with instrument selection seem to be slanted toward the parents. A young musician or concert-goer may find these sections dull. Factually sound but uninspired, and lacking in the color and human interest that might have dramatized the material.
