More than the subtitle (Negro girls) has been changed since the 1959 edition: though the topics remain the same, the text has been rewritten throughout, partly to make it more direct and succinct, more significantly to make it accord with present-day attitudes. The chapter on hair is, expectably, the most drastically changed. Although the approach seems devious (straightening techniques are attributed to white kinks and curls), the advice is sound: straighten or leave it natural according to what becomes you and what makes you feel comfortable. Overall, then, a thorough general guide differing from the many others in that it does not attempt to impose white standards of beauty on black girls, differing from the Leslie Uggams book in being about grooming rather than glamour.
