A HIGH WIND RISING

An historical novel set in the Pennsylvania Dutch section, in the years from 1730-1755, a vivid picture of the farmer- pioneers, and of their relations with the Indians, seen close up, with no glamour, as dirty, uncouth, savage children, some few trustworthy, others crafty and mean. The German settlers are pictured through the story of a small boy, found in an Indian camp, and taken away to live with his grandmother on the outskirts of the German settlement. He has learned Indian lore and way of thought and life; later, through Conrad Weiser, well- known intermediary, he learns to bargain with them; finally his woodcraft saves him and his family from massacre. There is so much incident and excitement, so much gruesome detail, that the customary picture of serenity and quiet in the Pennsylvania Dutch settlements is completely merged in confusion, activity and noisome conflict.
