When his three brothers, living in or around home, leave to enlist for World War II, 15 year old Tim Yoder is left with the responsibility of caring for Mom, a very capable woman, and a teen-age sister, Rosemary. They live on an island off the mainland of Pennsylvania, and the chief danger they face is that of flood. Tim is a particularly responsible boy, and his mother, an old hand at loving children and leaving them alone, stands aside to let her children grow up, but she is always there in emergencies. The book ends on Tim's note of triumph as, nearing 18 and enlistment age, he is the outstanding hero in a flood crisis. There's plenty of action in this story of wholesome family relations.
