MOUNT VERNON: THE LEGACY by Elswyth Thane

MOUNT VERNON: THE LEGACY

By

Pub Date: Oct. 30th, 1967
Publisher: Lippincott

A history which combats the misconception that Mount Vernon belongs to the federal government or the D.A.R., and celebrates the activities of the Mount Vernon Ladies' Association, which has preserved and improved the house and grounds since 1853. The author tends to get a bit tedious and effusive in describing the succession of Regents and Vice-Regents, their health, genealogy and friendships. When she talks about the place itself, despite her fussy, proprietary tone she reflects the concern for dignity and authenticity that keeps Mount Vernon free of Williamsburgy gimmicks. She has already told the story of reconstruction in Mount Vernon Is Ours (1966); more latterday details here for the avid few.
