KIRKUS REVIEW

About the offspring of Washington's wife, and their offspring, and the offspring of their offspring, and various offshoots--and the necessary circumstance that each was briefly a child does not make this day-by-daybook a juvenile. Mrs. Thane, author of Potomac Squire, Washington's Lady and Mount Vernon: The Legacy, obviously knows the legatees intimately and some researchers may be interested in the circumstances of step-son Jacky Custis' small-pox inoculation, of step-granddaughter Eliza Parke Custis' ""severe nervous afflictions,"" but young people will find this both stuffy and overstuffed.
