HILLEL: The Book Against the Sword by Ely E. Pilchik

HILLEL: The Book Against the Sword

By

Publisher: Henry Schuman

A brief biographical interpretation of Hillel, the Jewish scholar who became the president of the Sanhedrin and the outstanding spiritual and ethical leader of his time, just before Christ. In the first person (and presumably a Biblical prose) Hillel speaks again, as he makes the decision to go to Jerusalem, is elevated in the Patriarchate, teaches and interprets the Torah, officiates on Holy Days, and manifests patience and self-discipline and reverence. There are some glum wood engravings by Ilya Schor, and devout as Rabbi Pilchik may be in his interpretation, this is a pretty depressing dose for Jewish Sunday School children-who make up the only audience we can indicate.
