KIRKUS REVIEW

Any way you look at it, otters have captivating personalties and Mr. Liers, who's an animal authority and who worked with Walt Disney on the marvellous documentary film Reaver Valley gets it all across quite well. He tells a straightforward story, often humorous and never mawkish, of Ottiga's life in the Michigan-Wisconsin small waterways from his birth to the age of four. His parents and sisters killed in a trap, Ottiga spends a sad year and a half hunting for companionship. After his first friend, a farm dog, is killed, Ottiga finds his mate Beauty, and is thoroughly happy with their two broods and life in general. Good fictional documentation of otter habits, dangers and exulting playtimen.
