Of all the vehement feminists of the last century, perhaps none was as colorful as the almost legendary Nellie Bly. A pretty, well brought up young lady of her time, Nellie, in her teens, was defying every convention and had embarked on her career as a crusading journalist. Intrepidly, Nellie went directly to the source of her articles, living as an inmate in an asylum, visiting sweat shops, and finally embarking on the round the world journey suggested by Jules Verne's novel. Even had Nellie Bly been of less importance sociologically, the texture of her life was so colorful and rich in adventure that her biography would be of immediate interest, and in this case, Emily Hahn, without distorting, makes the most of her heroine.
