SMOOTH SAILING

Teen age problems are sensibly worked out again in another young novel by the author of A Chance to Belong (1953) and Vicki's Mysterious Friend (1947). The setting is a summer resort lake near Spokane and with Philip whose father runs some cabins and, Karen a dashing young guest- as stars in the cast- there are the mixups of romance as well as the more serious things in life. Despite his father's wishes, Phil wants to learn marine engineering and spends his free time boatbuilding to earn money for college. Karen has been emotionally shattered by her parents' divorce. It takes some doing- a sailboat race, a rival's ousting, serious talk etc.- before Phil earns both money and his father's consent and Karen gains balance for a life of her own. Worthwhile.
