Fairy Godmouse recalls the day that cute but rude Kitty Princess learned a lesson. When Kitty Princess demands a new dress for the ball, then calls her spells pathetic, Fairy Godmouse quits. So Kitty Princess goes shopping, ordering shoes from the vegetable stand, jewelry at a café, and a dress at the newsstand. The shop owners do their best, but the result is bizarre. With no time left to find an alternative, Kitty Princess goes to the ball. When the butler refuses to let her in, Kitty breaks down and makes her apologies. As she does, each part of her costume changes from ridiculous to beautiful. Then the prince learns his own surprising lesson. The illustrations are a delightful mix of textures and patterns, as the team uses paper and fabric collage techniques, as well as some real objects and photographs to create a masterful whole. The Japanese setting allows some beautiful fabrics and designs to be used as costumes. A pretty confection sure to please little princesses. (Picture book. 3-8)
