A wholly original story against the setting of New York 100 years ago, when steam was still suspect, the telephone and telegraph looked upon as bats in the belfry of young Sam Morse, and 14th Street was way up town. The Croton Reservoir was soon to do away with the Town Pump. And everything was changing too fast for Horace Greeley and not fast enough for Walt Whitman, restless poet in a newspaper office. All this comes quite naturally into a delightful story of five young Irish immigrants who lost their father in harbor in Cork, but who found a way to make friends in a shanty in New York.
