A little boy, a fence, and an intriguing assortment of construction machinery are the ingredients of this realistic children's story. For like most little boys, Stevie is fascinated by the activity of big machines and determines to find a way of watching them at work in a neighborhood lot. The fence is too high to see over. He tries peeping through a crack at the bottom, but soon is shooed away as a traffic menace, and his presence on the grounds themselves is decidedly against safety regulations. Still Stevie finds a way, and in the end, becomes a full-fledged sidewalk superintendent. Robert Doremus' illustrations grasp the rough power of the machines and the text should captivate any little boy who has ever strained on tip toe, to watch the grinding jaws of a power shovel.
