Information about the California citrus industry is the main by-product of a companionably written story about Tommy Barnes and Pedro, the Mexican hand the Barnes hire to help on their orange grove. Pedro, better at drawing than he is at farming, makes a lot of careless mistakes that finally cause Mr. Barnes to fire him. But in a moment of need- with a frost coming and Mr. and Mrs. Barnes away- Pedro, who holds no grudge, returns to help Tommy set up the smudge pots and save the crop.
