The 1860's, the underground railway, the nomination of Lincoln, Fremont House, Chicago, the slave South, owners of black slaves and white, abolitionists and secessionists in the making- all background the skillfully told story of Jim, a slave whose freedom has been bought, and whose freedom papers are ignored when he is caught in the toils of unscrupulous men who sell him again. His young friend, a white boy who has befriended him, travels the ""railway"" way to rescue him, and this provides a new twist to a somewhat familiar background. Excellent supplementary reading for schools and libraries.
