A strangely wistful, restless, rather sad story from the Cornish coast, which concerns a small elfin child and the old man who took care of her. Actually, they are king and queen of the fairies, working out an ordained mortal bondage. The re-entrance of Nan and her old guardian into fairyland is contingent on their good deeds as mortals. Imaginative children will be won by the quiet sense of reality that a moral concept can give a fairy tale, while literal minded children will not like it, unless it is introduced by an adult who senses the pure enchantment of the book.
