THE ISLAND IN TIME

By

Publisher: Doubleday

A at a D.P. camp in Italy where some two hundred refugees are waiting for passage to Palestine. Among them are Erich Solomon, restless, rebeions and using the officials of dictatorial stratagems; Betty, the wife he doesn't love, who Sidney, an UNRRA official, from New York's East. Side but identifying with these people, Mirm, who eventually finds a certain communal mission and exaltation in the destination; and Rene, who tells the story, an intellectual but an emotional deadbeat, flagellated by the guilt of survival where so many others have died, and by an egocentric self-concern which blocks his relationship with Miriam. And the point of suspension (the island in time) reaches its climax in anarchy, and in Solomon's unlawful escape, while Rene goes on alone- secure only in isolation... A portrayal of disorientation and defeat, which is not without its interest, but which is limited by its subject.
