KIRKUS REVIEW

The Gospel according to St. John has always been one of the most controversial as well as one of the most important books of the New Testament. Dr. Titus, professor of New Testament Literature at the University of Southern California School of Religion makes an outstanding contribution to the understanding of this Gospel in The Message of the Fourth Gospel. This is not a verse by verse commentary, but one which deals with natural units of the scripture as they embrace the same thought. The emphasis of this book is on the spirit rather than the Logos, and it is the spirit which is found to bind together all the elements of the Gospel into a meaningful unity. Dr. Titus has dealt with his subject in a way which will command him to other New Testament scholars, but ministers, teachers and nature students will also find this commentary a great help in understanding this Gospel which contains many of the most beautiful and meaningful passages of the Bible.
