KIRKUS REVIEW

A former employee of the US Bureau of Outdoor Recreation, Meves provides criteria for selecting basic equipment (boots, pack, sleeping bag, tent) and gives brief characterizations of the backpacking areas in each state. Some, like Kansas, have none at an; others like California, have miles of wilderness available. Most sites mentioned are in national parks and their specific attractions--access to wildlife, good fishing--as well as potential problems (seasonal mosquitoes) are listed. A natural resource.
