THE ""SHAGGY DOG"" STORY

A brisk semanticist focusses on the ""catch"" or shaggy dog story and his monograph on its origins (even the Greeks had a word for it) and development lead into examples that range from dog, to fish, to insects, birds and even humans, and make the most of the storyteller's art. Partridge's research has uncovered some most unserious lore, literary as well as folk, and this little book on an unlikely subject should find a loving home among those who are addicted. The illustrations by V. H. Drummond are appropriately shaggy. A knowledge of your customers' interests or a personal enthusiasm will give this a push.
