170 black and white photographs and 24 in color provide a substantial background for a text that consists primarily of Schweitzer's own words, recorded by the author from interviews or translated from notes. Along with the numerous on-location shots the author took in Africa which form a daily chronicle of the man and his work, there are reproductions from Schweitzer's family album and touches which include his birth certificate, pages from his hospital journal, etc. Although the color photos lack the clarity of the black and white pictures, some of which are quite remarkable, the overall view is excellent; offering a touch of Africa; a touchstone of humanitarianism and a lasting memorial to a monumental man.
