That not all comers felt alike about the War of Independence sparks the theme of this story of Connecticut's share in the struggle. Young Jason Reeves, apprentice to Silas Bingham's newspaper, The Litchfield Lightning, was himself host to embattled opinions. Despite his brother's unwavering patriot opinions and determination to join Washington's forces, Jason- and many others- needed to think things out. His apprenticeship during the early months helped convince him of the rightness of the fight for self government, of freedom's way. A microcosm of the thinking of many during the first days of revolution, Jason's ideas came to focus with the excitement of printing the Declaration of Independence, and with the drama of the melting of George Ill's statue. A meaty story, in which real issues provide their own conflicts.
