The scene is Jamaica where Letty has come with her large family. The first problem she must overcome, as the book opens, is that of dismissing her nurse- for Letty is at the stage where will power is beginning to count more than crutches. Bravely but with a grudge Letty lets Miss Dorothy go but there is a chip on her shoulder that remains after the nurse's departure a general apathy that almost prevents her from the benefits of her environs. Then with Nat, the boy next door, Letty begins to have fun. A movie company comes to make an unde film.
