OCEANOGRAPHERS IN ACTION

From algae to wrecks and zooplankton as seen via the cooperative efforts and judgments of marine biologists and geologists, physical and chemical oceanographers. The Navy and other federal agents surface most often (10 pages--of 82--on TENOC, the Navy's ten-year research program) although the government-financed (and now shelved) Mohole project is cautiously omitted. Unlike the Briggs book (see review below) which isolates individuals, their projects and personalities, these oceanographers are generally anonymous, and they are where it's at after it happens rather than during preparations. Mud rivers in the Bay of Bengal, tsunami (tidal waves) in the Pacific, desulination and fishing are singled out, and the enormous amount unknown is indicated. An encouraging entree, listing recommended courses and colleges and universities offering them.
