SCHOOL FOR BARBARIANS

Thomas Mann writes the introduction to his daughter's book and vouches for the many sidedness of her understanding of the problems facing education in Nazi Germany. Through careful analysis of the Nazi schools, the subjects taught, the ideology prevalent, the relation of the teacher to the state, the extra-curricula activities all turned toward training for war, she reveals a situation tragic in a country where, formerly, education was at a peak of excellence. There is enough case history and personal experience to give it a human -- and tragic -- significance.
