WE ADOPTED THREE

The warm-hearted story of a couple with a natural child, Jeff, takes in all aspects of adoptive parents and adopted children. For the Cadys realized that Jeff was spoiled, that they needed another child -- and found Janie when she was two. The changes Janie brought about, in the house, in Jeff and in themselves, made happiness for all and although the author held out against another adoption, he finally gave in and there were Husle and Sherry to be warmly welcomed by the other two children. Widely spaced, the four gave rise to much comment, on the part of relatives and friends, and Jeff's problems were no worse nor better than those of the three girls. Each of the four created different situations, in temperament and health, and in response to household situations, but this defence of adoption leaves no doubt as to its value. There is discussion of the wrong side of the question -- couples and homes not suitable, the rules and regulations of the agencies, the imperfect baby, etc., -- there is the feeling of the two now grown-up children -- and there is the natural, rather than the forced, humor of their family life. Not a sociological treatise but a sincere, thoughtful and often amusing balance sheet of more than documentary interest.
