An engineer and geologist retraces the trails covered in this arid country, basing his text on his own journals. The result is a sober, impersonal travelogue, a competent guide to the country, an old style travel book, with a modicum of exploration, but with none of the spark which has lightened travel books this decade past. From the Khyber Pass to Kabul, through Turkistan, across mountains and through valleys, seeking gold along the Oxus, finally concluding the journeys with the Helmand Valley and the P Panjao Hills. The peoples of these lands are of secondary interest to him; he shows them as proud and distinguished in appearance, generally pacific, except towards English.
