KIRKUS REVIEW

Cast in fictional form, this story of the Mayflower is authentic in historical details and in the mood and tempo of the times. John Alden, Gilbert Winslow, younger brother of Edward, Priscilla Mullins and Dorothy Bradford are the central figures in the amazing story of the flight across the ocean of refugees from religious persecution and English jails. For the young person weary of the dry textbook treatments or the sugarcoated juvenile versions of the Mayflower saga this accurate and well-told story of courage and drama -- the tedious voyage, dangers of the hostile land, hard winters of famine and death, and always the conflicts of personalities -- should be welcome.
