Haycox died in 1950 and this con brio trio -- one novella and two short stories- all having. Revolutionary War settings, were written in the 1920's, guessably not for a juvenile audience. They fairly sputter with activity and ""My lads"" and ""My Godfreys"" and energetic expletives of all kinds. The first tells of Jeffry Peale's mission interrupted when he is imprisoned by the British on a ""hell-ship."" But he makes his escape by jumping into the East River and with the help of a young woman, bears his dispatches to his general with dispatch. In The Drums Roll a farmer finds that an officer has equal courage; in the third A Deserter At Valley Forge returns to duty... Predictably professional for pre-established tastes in the genre.
