KIRKUS REVIEW

Year in, year out, books of this genre sell with more or less predictable regularity. This supplements the author's 1935 volume, and includes many not found in other similar volumes. There are a few surprisingly not included in the earlier volume, -- Thais, Manon, Louise, Die Fledermaus, Der Rosenkavalier, I Pagliacci; then there are operas that rank, perhaps, as light operas, such as The Bartered Bride, and operas in the modern vein, such as The Golden Cockerel. Twenty seven in all, with some biographical background, with critical comment implicit in the handling of the works, and with excellent story analysis linked closely with musical motifs. Important library item.
