On page 141 we reviewed Behind the Rising Sun, by James R. Young, the record of a newspaper man in Japan. Here is a study of the Japanese done by an economist, author of Shanghai; City for Sale, who went to the Orient at the age of 20, and has kept up his contacts through his work with the Institute of Pacific Relations. In this book he has revealed the human side of the Japanese, a split personality, a cross between a frustrated knight and an Oriental bully. He takes a stock character, shows how all influences work in his life, how he feels towards the war, what he is like in business. He gauges the mechanics of the Japanese psychology, emotions and thinking, and presents it in entertaining fashion.
