The life story of a city, the polyglot, chaolic keystone to China, which England's ruthless ""gentlemen rovers abroad"" seized and bled. The book opens with the white man's settlement in 1943, the growth of private enterprise as the big companies secured a throttlehold on trade, and on the people, through importing opium. Early day rebellions, with trouble slowly coming to a head with the influx of communism. The rise of Chiang Kai Shek and the Soong family, the Japanese encroachment, the destruction of the city, and the break in the hold of the missionaries, foreign officials, Talpans, as well as the power of the city itself. An informative history of the city, an excellent contribution to better understanding of the situation in the Far East, but not a general study of the situation.
