KIRKUS REVIEW

Professor Scott is using the years of his retirement to great advantage in making available to the public the results of his scholarly research in his chosen field, the New Testament. In this volume an inquiry is made into why the Gospels were written. It was many years after the death of Jesus that the gospel records were set down in their present form. By that time the Christian religion was well established. Why go back and trace its beginnings? Dr. Scott's general thesis is that it was found necessary to ground the Christian faith on a sure historical basis so as to avoid the extremes of theological speculations. The gospels were in fact quests of the historical Jesus as a foundation for the Christian faith.
