Fiction around fact, but although there's sincerity -- there's little life in this overlong novel of a minority people, the Southern Tiroleans, forced to choose between Italy and Germany. An outspoken anti-Fascist, Andreas, a boy of 23, is deported with his family to Czechoslovakia, where he gets work in a Skoda plant. He is followed there by Gwen, an American girl, who loves him. Fearless, Gwen testifies for a Jew framed on a murder charge, and shortly thereafter becomes persons non grate. She marries Andreas, who joins the Underground, helps effect an explosion at the koda works, is forced to flee, and is trapped and killed by his own brother. Adequate, but too deliberately built around incident, standard in characterization.
